Kuechly Named NFL's Top Rookie

By Dan Clasgens | Managing Editor

Former St. Xavier Bomber Luke Kuechly was named the Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year on Saturday after leading the league with 164 tackles.

Kuechly, a former First-Team All-TriStateFootball.com defender, graduated from St. Xavier in 2008 before going on to star at Boston College.

He was selected 9th overall in the first round by the Carolina Panthers in last April’s NFL Draft. After moving to middle linebacker in Week 5, the rookie helped the Panthers’ defense go from 24th to 10th in the league overall.

Kuechly earned 28 of the 50 votes by an AP panel to earn the award. Kuechly beat out Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner (11), Green Bay Packers cornerback Casey Heyward (6), St. Louis Rams cornerback Janoris Jenkins (3) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David (2).
